ABSTRACT

There are two purposes for this chapter. The first is to remind/introduce readers to some of the important statistical contributions and attitudes of the great American scientist John W. Tukey. The second is to take note of the fact that statistics commencement speeches are important elements in the communication of statistical lore and advice and not many seem to end up in the statistical literature. One that did was Leo Breiman’s 1994.1 It was titled “What is the Statistics Department 25 years from now?” Another is Tukey’s2

presentation to his New Bedford high school. There has been at least one article on how to prepare such talks.3
