We have previously discussed the existence of isomers of organic compounds-compounds that have the same molecular formula but a di…erent construction. Isomers can be divided into two types-structural isomers and stereoisomers. For example, n-butane (7.1) and 2-methyl propane (7.2) are structural isomers-the atoms are joined together in a di…erent way. Structural isomers are described as having a di…erent constitution.
