ABSTRACT
When studying a subject, it is prudent to study its history rst, even briey, to avoid the reinvention of wheel. The history of tribology contains many examples of sound ideas that were forgotten or ignored, and rediscovered much later:
1. Leonardo da Vinci proposed the two basic laws of friction in the beginning of the sixteenth century, but they were rediscovered by Amontons almost two centuries later.
