ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the set of steps to be followed for medical procedure for the intrathecal baclofen trial injection. Initially, the patient's consent is to be obtained. The procedure should be completed as early as possible (before 12:00 noon). The equipment has to be assembled for a lumbar puncture; additionally an antibacterial filter, two syringes (5 mL and 2 mL), baclofen for intrathecal use (normally in solution of 50 µg/mL) and 10 mL of sterile normal saline are also needed. The required dose of intrathecal baclofen is diluted with normal saline to make a solution of 5 mL. A lumbar puncture is made using a sterile procedure. Once cerebrospinal fluid flow is confirmed, the filter is connected to the spinal needle and the baclofen solution is injected over 3 minutes.
