ABSTRACT

There is no consensus definition of science. Scientific realists claim that sci-

ence aims at truth and that one ought to regard scientific theories as true,

approximately true, or likely true. Conversely, a scientific antirealist or in-

strumentalist argues that science, while aiming to be instrumentally useful,

does not aim (or at least does not succeed) at truth, and that we should

not regard scientific theories as true (Levin 1984). There is no such thing as

philosophy-free science; there is only science whose philosophical baggage is

taken on board without examination (Dennett, 1995). It is agreeable that a

scientific theory should/can provide predictions about future events; we often

take scientific theories to offer explanations for those phenomena that occur

regularly or that have demonstrably occurred at least twice.
