ABSTRACT

A rare plant-insect relationship: epizoic symbiosis When searching for weevils in the moss forests of Borneo and Panama, entomologists can see several individuals of certain species with greenish elytra. Probably algae, blue or green, are growing on the elytra of these longliving insects. Dr. Stockwell, at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, Panama, has frequently collected greenish Geobyrsa nodifera. Although offer ing camouflage, this coloration seems to be due to the high humidity reigning at this altitude rather than a color brought about by selection.
