ABSTRACT

Pollination In 1793, the German botanist C. K. Sprengel discovered the role of insects in pollination. In several exotic orchids, the phenomenon of pollination is so complex that the term "coevolution" has been given to the process that evolved. The process by which some temperate and exotic orchids are polli nated (pseudocopulation, as described later) contributed to the idea of coevo lution of a very specialized type. Orchid pollination does not always take place in this manner, though, and pollination is not generally the result of a parallel. Many insects pollinate, and many flowers provide them with edible pollen and nectar.
