ABSTRACT
Un de r the NPDES system, permi ts are issued to d i f fe ren t types of facili t ies that discharge pollutants into U.S. waters. A NPDES permi t is essentially a license that allows a facili ty to discharge contaminated water. On the NPDES perm i t applicat ion, the facili ty provides info rma t ion about the type of facili ty and type of discharge being requested. If the fac i l i ty’s applicat ion is approved, the permi t t ing author ity will issue a permi t that contains various condi tions related to the fac i l i ty’s pol lutant discharges. The permi t will general ly contain specific l imitations on contaminat ion levels or speci fic actions that the facili ty must take, such as sampling or inspections.
