ABSTRACT

Chelating agents, or sequestrants, are ingredients that are capable of complexing with and inactivating metallic ions. Chelating agents are used in foods, drugs, and cosmetics to prevent the adverse effects of metal ions on the stability and appearance of cosmetic products. While any chelating agent will have an effect, chemists have considered ethylenediarninetetraacetic acid (EDT A) to be the classic metalchelating agent. EDT A will be used as a primary example of a preservative potentiator in the material presented.
