ABSTRACT

I have sometimes referred to the process of telling the audience the sentence as 'brainwashing5. And I do not think that that is too powerful a word. It arises from one of the most fundamental properties of the brain; the storage of items in the memory and the almost instant recognition that what is being experienced at the moment is already in the memory. It is the process that enables us to pick out speech we wish to hear from the background noise of the cocktail party, or that enables us to recognise a line drawing as a representation of a three-dimensional scene.
