ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the topics of contact stresses and pressure vessels are discussed. Contact stress between two elastic bodies is seen in many systems such as ball bearings, trunnions, and wheels on a railroad track. Maximum contact stress is directly normal to the plane of the contact area zone and is shown in this chapter for spheres and cylinders in contact. The next topic discusses the stresses on the walls of pressure vessels. Both thin-walled and thick-walled vessels are covered.
