ABSTRACT

Nodular fasciitis is a benign reactive proliferation of fibroblast-like cells that appears as a well-circumscribed, subcutaneous, fascial or intramuscular nodule. Dermatofibromas is benign fibrous histiocytomas, are common cutaneous nodules of unknown etiology. There are a number of histologic subtypes. Tumors that grow deeply into the fat underlying the skin do have the potential for aggressive growth and local recurrence. A fibrosarcoma is a malignant tumor of fibroblasts with no other cellular differentiation. The greater the cellularity and the number of mitotic figures, the more aggressive the neoplasm. The most aggressive fibrosarcomas can metastasize, especially to the lungs via blood stream. Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans is a locally aggressive sarcoma of low-intermediate malignancy that favors young to middle-aged adults. Lesions that are present at birth or with an onset during childhood have been reported.
