ABSTRACT

Obliquus capitis inferior (0.13 g; Fig. 8) • Attachments: From spinous process of C2 to transverse process of C1. • Usual innervation: Branch of dorsal ramus of C1 (Raven 1950, Gibbs 1999). Obliquus capitis superior (3.59 g; Fig. 8) • Attachments: From transverse process of C1 to occipital bone. • Usual innervation: Branch of dorsal ramus of C1 (Raven 1950, Gibbs 1999). Rectus capitis anterior (weight not measured) • Attachments: From body of atlas to occipital bone. • Usual innervation: Branch of ventral ramus of C1 (Raven 1950, Gibbs 1999). Rectus capitis lateralis (weight not measured) • Attachments: From transverse process of atlas to occipital gone. • Usual innervation: Branch of ventral ramus of C1 (Raven 1950, Gibbs 1999). Rectus capitis posterior major (0.60 g; Fig. 8) • Attachments: From spinous process of C2 to occipital gone. • Usual innervation: Branch of dorsal ramus of C1 (Raven 1950, Gibbs 1999). • Notes: In gorillas this muscle is usually smaller than the rectus capitis posterior

minor, according to the literature review of Gibbs (1999). Rectus capitis posterior minor (weight not measured; Fig. 8) • Attachments: From posterior tubercle of C1 to region of inferior nuchal line. • Usual innervation: Branch of dorsal ramus of C1 (Raven 1950, Gibbs 1999). Longus capitis (weight not measured) • Attachments: From transverse processes of C2-C6 to basiocciput. • Usual innervation: Branches of ventral rami of C1-C5 (Raven 1950, Gibbs

1999). Longus colli (weight not measured; Fig. 6) • Attachments: From ventral tubercles of C3-C6 and bodies of C2-C6, to

transverse processes of C2 and C1, ventral tubercle of C1, and transverse process of C6.
