ABSTRACT

The Grassmann envelope developed in Chapter 7, to pass from the affine case to the general case, relied on the assumption of characteristic 0. Accordingly, the theory in characteristic p 6= 0 requires a separate discussion. The most striking feature is that without the characteristic 0 assumption, Specht’s problem now has a negative solution, and this chapter is devoted to various counterexamples. In Volume II, we actually get a positive solution for affine PI-algebras.
