ABSTRACT

Survey research is a method of inquiry that has widespread use over a diverse number of research settings. It is not encompassed well in either the quantitative or qualitative domains, but rather incorporates elements of both and requires several additional, unique considerations. Market research is a form of survey research, as is random telephone polling of an electorate to determine candidate preference. When an entire population is surveyed, this is known as a census or status survey, whereas when a subset of a known population participates it is known as a survey sample.1,2

7.1 THE NATURE OF SURVEY METHODOLOGY

Survey research is a systematic way to capture the beliefs, attitudes, or outcomes, the results of which can often be generalized to the larger population from which the sample was selected.1-4 This type of research is the most common form used in social science and health service research.5 The method has gained considerable credibility through its widespread use and acceptance in the academic environment.4
