ABSTRACT

Melatonin, N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine, is a tryptophan-derived molecule widely distributed in nature in both plant and animal sources, such as human milk, bananas, beets, cucumbers, and tomatoes. In humans, melatonin is synthesized primarily in the pineal gland but is also produced by other organs such as the retina, bone marrow, gastrointestinal tract, gonads, and immune system.
