ABSTRACT
Extensible markup language (XML) is a markup language that defines the structures of documents. Like hypertext markup language (HTML), XML originated from standard generalized markup language (SGML). This chapter first briefly reviews the concepts of markup languages, specifically, SGML and HTML. Then, the basic XML elements are discussed. Furthermore, two important concepts of XML, well-formed and validated XML, are explained in detail.
