ABSTRACT

Healthcare is important to the well-being of our society and economy. Healthcare involves patients, diseases, healthcare providers, insurance companies, pharmacies, pharmaceutical and medical equipment manufacturers, government agencies, and so on. To support an efficient management of healthcare and decisions about disease control, the quality of patient care, and healthcare cost control, we want to build a healthcare information system that manages data related to the quality and the cost of healthcare. The healthcare information system includes data about diseases, patients, healthcare providers, insurance companies, and pharmacies. This chapter describes the use of Microsoft Access and Visual Studio to develop this healthcare information system. This chapter covers four phases of developing a database for this healthcare information system: enterprise modeling, conceptual data modeling, logical database design, and database implementation using Microsoft Access. After the database is developed, Microsoft Visual Studio is used to build the Windows-based healthcare information system and the Web-enabled healthcare information system containing the Access database.
