ABSTRACT

Introduction The mainframe has long been the home of mission-critical applications in most organizations and still is in many instances.* Some twenty or so years ago, there was a move to nonproprietary systems, such as UNIX, Linux, and the proprietary Windows/NT. However, these systems did not traditionally have the maturity or stability of mainframe systems, especially as they tended to be combinations of client/server and distributed systems. The mainframe advantage in this arena was the fact that everything was on one system and each layer of software on it was aware of the others and the synergy, and cooperation between them was there.
