ABSTRACT

The grey mullets (Mugilidae) are numerous in species and found throughout the world. Because of their circumglobal distribution, high abundances, schooling behaviour and palatability, grey mullet species form a popular target of commercial, subsistence and recreational fi shers. Grey mullets are harvested using a variety of methods and are caught commercially around the world. Although in excess of 70 grey mullet species exist (Eschmeyer 2014) and fi shers have targeted them since ancient times (Koutrakis 1999), the general principles behind catching these fi sh have generally remained the same amid the evolution of gear and technology.
