ABSTRACT

Egyptian aquaculture produced over 1,018,000 tonnes of fi nfi sh in 2012, about 74% of the country’s total freshwater and marine fi sh production (1,371,975 tonnes), with a total market value of about US$1.354.65 million (1 US$ = 5.99 Egyptian pounds), providing a cheap source of protein for the country’s 82.3 million people in 2012 (GAFRD 2013a). The remaining 26% (354,200 tonnes) comes from capture fi sheries in the Nile, coastal lagoons and inland lakes. In the last 10 years (2003-2012) aquaculture increased 2.3 fold, from 444,800 t in 2003 to 1,018,000 t in 2012, whereas capture fi sheries decreased 20%, from 431,200 t in 2003 to 354,200 t in 2012 (Fig. 20.1).
