Failure in rock

The term ‘rock’ as used by geotechnical engineers covers a wide range of materials, from hard polyminerallic igneous and metamorphic rocks, such as granite and dolerite, on the one hand, to soft lithified argillaceous rocks, such as mudstone and shale, on the other hand. The degree of oxidization or weathering can also have a marked influence on the characteristics of the rock.
