ABSTRACT

Overall 40 graphite columns containing approximately 400 bricks in total were removed. Bricks taken from 21 columns which were located in the affected domains of the graphite stack were examined in detail. Besides alterations in the shape of the bricks, they examined changes in the heat conductivity of graphite, its electric resistance, and strength as a function of the neutron flux density, neutron energy, and graphite temperature. Upon the completion of the reassembly operations and the examination of the graphite stack, the AI reactor successfully operated until 1987. It was completely decommissioned on May 25, 1987, i.e., 36 years after its start-up.
