Introduction

In modem theories of solidification of metals and alloys the initial melt is considered to be a continuous medium with uniform and perfectly disordered atomic distribution. As a crystal grows, the liquid phase supplies the “construction material” to it in the form of individual atoms. This concept is based on the idea of liquid as a strongly compressed gas with chaotic distribution of atoms and their Brownian motion.
