Here m is the mass of iodine and V the volume of the discharge vessel. y is 5/3=1.67 for a monatomic gas and lowers for most molecular gases to 1.4, which is only a decrease of about 16%. Assuming realistic en-ors of 5% for the other three input parameters the total pressure can be determined with an accuracy of about 30%. Using this p,„, plasma composition calculations yield the iodine partial pressure. This together with the measured side-on intensity of the 804 nm iodine line can now be used to calculate the temperature profile.
