ABSTRACT

I. Introduction Major theoretical effort has been expended in the lighting community to understand the behavior of the electrode-plasma interaction for high intensity discharge lamps [1-3]. Within this theoretical work there have been various attempts to numerically simulate the electrode behavior, but in most of the instances the sheath is addressed independently from the rest of the plasma [2,3]. In this paper we simulate in a self-consistent manner the electrode-sheath-plasma interaction for a high intensity discharge (HID) lamp in horizontal operation, 3-dimensional lamps. For demonstration purposes, an ultra high mercury pressure video projection lamp is simulated.
