ABSTRACT

In the previous chapters, the various methods of designing and building girder type bridge decks, both cast in-situ and precast have been described. There are many factors that determine which kind of bridge deck and which type of construction method are the most economical or most the appropriate. Among such factors are terrain, climate, appearance, local traditions, as well as the experience and prejudices of the client, designer and contractor. However, one of the most important factors is the scale of the project. In this chapter, a 22 m wide highway bridge deck will be considered, and the effect of the scale of the project on the design and construction decisions will be explored. Thus this chapter serves as a synthesis of the previous chapters describing the various types of girder bridge deck.
