ABSTRACT

A number of special terms must be applied to in-sect parts to provide the precision necessary for accurate description and to ensure brevity in identification tables, keys, and descriptions. Insect parts are homologous from order to order but are variously modified within each order. This chapter provides a general discussion of these parts. At the beginning of each insect order section in Part II, the reader will find a figure illustrating a representative of that order and labeling of its basic parts. At the end of the book is a glossary of the terms used throughout, with cross-references to the text illustrations. Proper use of the book will require frequent reference to these illustrations and the glossary.
