TEM investigations of industrial platinum on graphite catalyst systems: image processing and particle morphology

Metal nanoparticles dispersed throughout appropriate support materials are widely used as industrial catalyst systems since they provide a means of achieving a very high metal surface area. Platinum on graphite catalysts are used for selective organic hydrogenation reactions. Variations in the preparation of the catalysts have been shown to influence the selectivity and activity for particular reactions, though the reasons for the change in these catalytic properties are not always clear (Henry, 1998).
