Is atomic resolution EELS possible?

ABSTRACT: The feasibility of atomic resolution EELS depends on control of various delocalisation mechanisms, comprising: (i) dynamical probe propagation (beam broadening), (ii) the inelastic scattering cross-section, and (iii) the non-local quantum-mechanical nature of the quantity to be measured. This work deals with the first effect, by coupling HREM-style multislice calculations of the propagation of O.lnm-probes in materials with LDFT site-andmomentum projected DOS calculations representing spatially resolved ELNES. The selected application is a grain boundary in sapphire.
