Differentiation of zirconia polymorphs using EELS and ELNES

Electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) and energy-loss near edge structure (ELNES) analysis, performed in the TEM by McComb (1996) have shown that differences in the local environment surrounding the oxygen atoms of the three common Zr02 phases are reflected in the ELNES of the oxygen K-edge (for “phase pure” powders) thus providing a fingerprint with which to distinguish between the different phases. In the current contribution we demonstrate the application of high spatial resolution EELS and ELNES to the study of a “real” multiphase Zr02 ceramic.
