ABSTRACT

Alternative controls that use signals from the brain, muscles, voice, lips, head position, eye position, and gestures are candidate handsfree means for humans to interact with computers. US Air Force scientists (McMillan et al. 1997) have documented a comprehensive description of non-conventional control technology. A NATO Working Group recently reviewed this technology for aerospace applications (Leger 1998). Before discussing application issues for alternative controls, a brief description of several candidate controls is provided below. Each is addressed in more detail elsewhere in this volume.
