ABSTRACT
Pocket Penetrometer Figure 8.35 shows a pocket penetrometer (Holtz et aI., 1981) which can be used to determine undrained shear strength of clay soils both in the laboratory and in the field. The procedure consists in pushing the penetrometer directly into the soil and noting the strength marked on the calibrated spring.
