When the Point is Inside Let 0 be an interior point of a rectangular loaded area ABCD shown in Fig. 6.9(a). It is required to compute the vertical stress O"z below this point 0 at a depth z from the surface. For this purpose, divide the rectangle ABCD into four rectangles marked 1 to 4 in the Fig. 6.9(a) by drawing lines through O. For each of these rectangles, compute the ratios Vb. The influence value I may be obtained from Fig. 6.7 or 6.8 for each of these ratios and the total stress at P is therefore
