ABSTRACT

Many people still believe that concrete was invented by the Romans. Of course, some concrete structures built by the Romans are still in pretty good shape and even in some cases still in use, such as the Pantheon and Coliseum in Rome, the Pont du Gard in France, the Aqueduct of Segovia in Spain, Hadrian’s Wall in England and the Cologne aqueduct in Germany (Figures 2.1 to 2.5). Archaeologists, however, have discovered more and more proof that even before the Romans, the Greeks (Koui and Ftikos 1998) and Phoenicians (Baronio et al. 1997) used concrete on a smaller scale (Papadakis and Venuat 1966).
