ABSTRACT
This chapter will examine how the application of the recent scientific knowledge developed in the field of hydraulic binders and admixtures resulted in the development of what is presently called high-performance concrete (HPC). It should be pointed out that the development of HPC was not simply the fruit of a scientific approach; as has very been often the case, the science and the art of HPC were developed simultaneously. At present, due to the knowledge accumulated, the trend of discoveries and development is changing, for example, self-compacting concretes and reactive powder concretes (RPCs) were the result of a scientific approach. However, as has been pointed out in the previous chapters, there is still scientific progress to be made in the field of hydraulic binders and concrete.
