ABSTRACT

Many rural roads began life as natural, unpaved (dirt) tracks for horse-drawn or off-

road vehicles. The main forms of damage that such roads suffer are wheel rutting and

erosion due to wind and water. With occasional attention to drainage, unpaved tracks are

able to carry up to about 10 veh/d. Over the years, they may be progressively up-graded

by a process known as stage construction. Typical stages will now be described.
