ABSTRACT
The way devoted to effective travel by motor vehicles, and sometimes by foot and
by cycle, and using a reserved strip of land lying between otherwise adjoining
properties.
The term path is used to describe ways solely for pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders, and
the like. Within the road, the operational surface actually used by vehicles is called the
carriageway. The terms roadway and travelled way are alternatives which are not used in
this book.
