ABSTRACT

Previously, we have discussed network security measures such as Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates and Internet Protocol Security (IPSec). By using SSL certificates or IPSec, a virtual private network (VPN) allows users to remotely access network resources through the Internet. In this chapter, we are going to take a look at how these security measures are used in the VPN technology. A VPN allows a computer on the home network to access virtual machines created on Microsoft Azure. The VPN technology allows the virtual machines created on Microsoft Azure to share the network resources available on the home network and vice versa. With a VPN, an organization can deliver private messages through the public network such as the Internet. While a data transaction is carried out through the Internet, the VPN technology provides the authentication and encryption mechanisms to protect the data transaction. This chapter examines how the VPN service works. VPN-related concepts and technologies are introduced. This chapter also describes the configuration of VPN servers and VPN clients and VPN service management.
