ABSTRACT

A knowledge of pest-crop interactions in the management of arthropod pests is of paramount importance. The development and use of a particular crop plant species and appropriate cultivars of that plant species are the base from which all management strategies must arise. If a crop cultivar is susceptible to pests (i.e., it is readily attacked and damaged by the pest), then chemical control is more likely to be the primary method used to reduce arthropod damage. However, if a crop cultivar is resistant (e.g., it is inherently less damaged or less infested than comparison cultivars [34]), pest management options are substantially broadened.
