ABSTRACT

A successful CIO will always leave a legacy upon leaving an organization. What he or she will be remembered for will not be the applications portfolio, or the beloved infrastructure, or even the security plan. It will be the people and the organization left behind that will represent the real accomplishments of the CIO. It will be that legacy which will make the CIO a “Level 5” leader. Per Jim Collins (2001), a Level 5 leader is one whose organization continues to perform at an extraordinary level even after he or she has left. Put another way, you do not develop the organization; you develop the people and the people develop the organization. It is done successfully no other way.
