ABSTRACT
Good site selection is one of the most neglected steps in blueberry production. It can save considerable expense later on and mean the difference between profit and loss. Once the grower has determined that highbush blueberries will grow well in the general area, specific planting sites should be selected. Wild plants growing in the areasuch as huckleberry, laurel, and wild blueberry-or a mixture of pine (Pinus sp.), red maple (Acer rubrum), and white cedar (Chamaecypans thyoides) generally indicate suitable soil. The local climate of the site should be studied for at least a couple of seasons prior to planting, and the following conditions considered.
