ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION Illegal logging and associated trade is being addressed at international fora

such as the United Nations Forum on Forests and action plans of the G8 as well as through bilateral agreements between producing and consuming countries. An historic meeting on the topic of illegal logging was held in Bali, Indonesia in September 2001 and resulted in a declaration that was endorsed by all at tending governments. Similar ministerial meetings are planned for Africa in early 2003 and for Latin America. A number of private sector companies and associations have made commitments or developed codes of conduct to im prove their buying practices in the case of retailers or to improve their lending practices, in the case of financial institutions.
