ABSTRACT

Driver behaviour has, for many years, been recognised as the main cause of death and injury on the roads. Sabey and Taylor (1980) for example, showed that road users were a causal factor in 94% of collisions. The road environment and the vehicle were causal factors in 28% and 8.5% of collisions (total greater than 100% because crashes can be attributable to multiple causes.) The driver has repeatedly been shown to play a dominant role in collision causation (Department for Transport, 2007).
