ABSTRACT
The Northern Ireland road network consists of some 23700 km of adopted road carriageway on which there are more than 7700 bridges with spans greater than 2 m. Prior to 1973 the maintenance of the bridge stock was organised along similar lines to the system in Great Britain, with the various councils undertaking or arranging the maintenance and the Ministry of Development fulfilling a role similar to that of the Department of Transport.
