ABSTRACT

In the period that Thomas Telford was working on major projects to improve transportation in Scotland-the Caledonian Canal and a network of over 1000 miles of roads-there were two proposals to provide an alternative to ferry boats crossing the Forth between South and North Queensferry. The first, in 1805, was for a double tunnel-one for comers and one for goers. Outline details were produced but nothing further came of the scheme.
