M4 This rule means that only the areas of the main members would be measured. It is recommended that no deduction is made for notches or splayed ends. This rule applies to items which are incidental to the steelwork involved but it could be argued that items such as stanchion bases are not incidental and should be included in the measurement. It is recommended that it be made clear in the Preamble that the areas included are those of the primary members only.
