Abstract Fromthepointofviewofcompetitiveness,atimberstructureshouldbeaseconomicalas possiblewhilsthavingsufficientstructuralproperties.Theconnectionbetweeneconomy (assembly)andmechanicalpropertiesisthereforeimportant.Adesignmethodfortimber ispresented,illustratedwithequationsandnumericalexamplesforaspecificmulti-storey timberstructure.Testsoneasy-toassemblebeam-columnconnectionshavebeen performedanditisshownthatthestructuralpropertiesofthejointsaresufficientfor applicationinthestructureinquestion.Thispaperindicatesthattheconnectionsinsome timberstructuresneednotbehighlyengineeredandthattheemphasisshouldlie elsewhere.Themainpropertiesoftheconnectionsinthisspecificbeam-columnsystem aretheeconomy(whenitcomestopurchaseandassembly)andtheserviceability properties.Traditionalresearchshouldbecomplementedwithresearchwhichfocuseson theseparameters.
