ABSTRACT
Abstract Theerectionofanewofficeandshoppingcentre-theFriedrichstadt-PassageinBerlinnecessitatedadeepexcavationsurroundedbytwinsheetpilesfixedwithgroundanchors. Fullscaletestswereperformedtoinvestigatethestrainingoftwodifferentload-distributionplatesandthesheetpilewhileloadingthegroundanchorbyupto1.5timesthe serviceload.Measurementsweretakenofthestrainsintheloadplateandthesheetpile, deformationsinthesheetpilelock,andtheanchorforceapplied.Theresultsofthe measurementsconfrrmthatarelativelythinload-distributionplate(4.0em)ismore suitablethanathickerone(6.0em).Theauthoritieswereinagreementwiththis"Design byTesting"methodandgavetheirnecessaryapproval.
