ABSTRACT

Fractured porous media are frequently encountered adjacent to present or proposed waste disposal facilities. These fractured media may, for example, take the form of a fractured clay or till (e.g. with blocky fractures in the upper weathered zone and with predominantly vertical fractures in the unweathered clay or till), or a fractured rock (e.g. mudstone, siltstone, sandstone) which has significant horizontal and vertical fracturing. Typically, fractured media will involve a series of fractures separated by blocks of intact material which will be referred to as the matrix of the fractured soil or rock.
